Hannah praises God for who He is and what He has done. In contrast to Hannah's faithfulness, we learn about Eli and his sons and their unfaithfulness to serve God.

God had promised that Eli would be judged because of his sin. God judges Eli's house and the nation of Israel, who did not seek Him or obey.

The Philistines think they had defeated God by capturing the ark, but God shows his power and Sovereignty to both the Philistines and to Israel as He orchestrates the return of the ark to Israel.

After years of defeat and subdigation, Israel repents and turns back to God. God displays His power and faithfulness to Israel.

Saul is commanded by God to defeat the Amalekites but Saul disobeys and thus God takes the kingdom from him. God reminds us that obedience is better than sacrifice.

After God had rejected Saul as king, God sends Samuel to David to anoint him as the new King of Israel. David shows he is a man after God's own heart by continuing to serve in his area of influence.

David shows his faith in God as he confronts Goliath. David desires that Lord and His power would be made know to His people and they would glorify Him as God.

Jonathan shows his true character as he demonstrates his commitment to be faithful to God and to David, no matter what it cost him and no matter what the consequences in his life.

As David flees Saul and faces hard decisions, Saul's obsession with killing David leads to the execution of God's priests. David learns valuable lessons about following God.

David sees God's protection as Saul continues to pursue him. God is growing David and makingin him into a man after his own heart as he faces tribulations and challeges in his life.

David has the opportunity to kill Saul, but instead trust in the character of God and shows Saul mercy, knowing that God will work out His plan in His time for His glory.

Nabal is a rich man who acts foolishly toward David and while David wants revenge, the wisdom of Abigail wins out and David heeds her advice and honors God in the process.

Once again, Saul is pursuing David. We see in Saul's life that while he can admit his sin and that while he can feel sorry about what he did, there is no true repentance. God wants us to change our mind about sin and believe his word so that we can live fully for Him.

David flees from Saul to the land of the Philistines but finds that he has to compromise his values there. Meanwhile Saul hits rock bottom, and after God refuses to answer him, commits a terrible sin and it will end up costing him his life.

David is faced with a situation in which he would have to fight his own people and while this is happening his family is taken captive by an enemy. God shows mercy and frees him from the battle and brings David's focus back on Him. David rescues his people with a renewed dedication to the Lord.

God fulfills his promise to remove the kingdom from Saul, because of his sin. We see the horrendous events that occur because of Saul's disobedience and we are reminded that sin always carries consequences.
