"Lachish was a prosperous, unfortified Canaanite city under Egyptian rule during the late Bronze Age. It was, in fact, one of the most prosperous cities in all the land of Canaan. But the city was completely and utterly destroyed and left abandoned for two centuries before being rebuilt. This sudden destruction is likely attributable to the conquest of the land by Joshua.
Once the Israelites had come into the land and defeated Jericho and Ai, five Amorite kings banded together to halt their progress and push them out of the land by making war on the Gibeonites who had surrendered to this new people. (Josh 10) This coalition was made up of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Eglon and Lachish.
Israel roundly defeated the Amorites and proceeded to completely destroy the cities of Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron and Debir subjugating the entire region.
Centuries later, after the Kingdom of Israel split into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah, Solomon’s son King Rehoboam fortified 15 cities with strong defenses and commanders as well as supplies of food, olive oil and wine. He put shields and spears in all the cities, and made them very strong according to the Scriptures. (2 Chr 11)
Lachish would become the second most fortified and strategic city in the Kingdom of Judah second only to Jerusalem. It defended the Kingdom from Philistine incursion on it’s western front and guarded the trade route between Egypt and Jerusalem.
Several generations after this, King Amaziah would be assassinated in Lachish. (2 Kings 14, 2 Chr 25)
Lachish features heavily during the great Assyrian invasion in which the Northern Kingdom was destroyed. The Southern Kingdom of Judah had sworn subservience to Assyria and avoided destruction but the reformer King Hezekiah, who had called the land to repentance in the face of what they had seen happen to the Northern Kingdom rebelled against Assyria and prepared for the repercussions by strengthening the …
